ANNULET
a sonic duo collaborating on improvisational musical experiences
named after a moth, ANNULET loves dark and mysterious places. it pollinates secretly. it acknowledges the influence of the moon.
as an improvisational duo, destanne and stasia tune to the pulse of the moment; the season, the weather, the space they play, and to each other.
the audience is invited into a world where moth is the storyteller, and fire is the muse.
exploring the living nature of all things invokes a palpable sense of animism, and the delight that we are just a part of a vast and dynamic ecosystem.
coming from the islands of west coast canada, the songs bear the voice and influence of forests, coastlines, and the community of creatures that reside there.
this music is an innovative exploration that highlights the interconnectedness of all things.
it is also a journey into the sonic possibilities of electric/accoustic performance.
destanne
“sound exploration is my cup of tea.
throughout my life I have been exploring tonal frequency and the primal response to creating and experiencing music however one may perceive that term to be.
i am intrigued by the dynamics of sound sharing in collective improvisation; the alchemy of contribution.”
destanne started her journey into music with the study of classical flute. she has played in numerous bands, including her 10 year project, ‘air above mountains’. she has played at woodstove festival, active passive, copyright copyleft, elevate the arts, and numerous other events and festivals.
as part of annulet she creates dynamic improvisational soundscapes that range from heavy synth pulses, to complex mbira melodies. her sounds are modulated through a range of pedals creating unique frequencies that honour the history of experimental electronic music, while adding her own depth, range and sensitive creativity.
she is also the owner, designer and maker at moss grey atelier.

stasia is a multidisciplinary artist who until recently worked predominently with photography, poetry, and painting.
upon joining ANNULET, stasia has been shifting into lyric writing, singing day and night, and learning all of the pedals which allow her voice to integrate with destanne’s sound.
her fine arts degree is from emily carr university, she is a graduate of the SFU creative writing studio program, and she holds a permaculture design certificate, where for her final project she designed a realm that supports biodiversity, and more specifically included plants and trees that encourage the flourishing of moths. she designed this project in tandem with, and as an extension of annulet. she was not expecting to become an ambassador for moths…..but here she is.

a note on our chosen name
annulet in a moth that is drawn to sea campion, thrift and rock-rose.
it’s preferred habitat is rocky coastlines, beaches, heathland, moorland and downland.
this moth evolves its wing colour to blend in with its surroundings.
it roams england, wales, scotland and ireland, just like destanne and stasia’s ancestors.
its scientific name is charrissa obscuratta.
charrissa (greek)meaning grace, kindness, and beloved.
obscuratta (latin)implying made dark, dim, secret or little known.
annulet also means little ring. together destanne and stasia form to the 2 wings of a moth,
but they also form the bond of a circle.
a circle which includes all of life.
